Before Facebook cut down on engagement bait, it was common for companies to tell fans to respond to be entered into a contest or to ask a question. These questions were along the lines of “What do you think of this new law?” If you agree, respond with the like button. If you disagree, click the angry face icon. The goal was to prompt a response, which would show engagement on the page. Many times this was successful.
While that kind of engagement was always meaningless, it made everyone feel good because it showed activity. Now, most social media platforms frown on engagement bait, so it’s not wise to continue the practice.
Because the rules are always changing, creating engaging social media content is a never-ending challenge. There is no magic content that is guaranteed to increase your social media engagement rates. However, there are general guidelines that will put you on the right track.
Be consistent, but don’t spam your fans.
No one likes when their News Feed is inundated with posts from one Page, but this happens to people all the time. Instead of posting everything at once, space all your important posts throughout the day.
Deliver high quality relevant content.
You may want to sell your product on Facebook, Twitter, or the social media platform of your choice, but your fans don’t want to be hounded to purchase it. That’s why you should focus on creating content that fits your company’s image. Posting memes may seem like fun, but if you work for a law firm or a doctor that may not be appropriate. Instead, you might want to focus on giving accurate law advice for a lawyer or medical advice on a doctor’s social media pages.
Even if content is relevant, you still have to make sure it is high quality. Only post links to sites you know are trusted or are good sources. When in doubt, create your own content that people will want to share.
Text isn’t the only way to provide useful information. If your business lends itself to appealing visuals, take advantage of photos. If you are in an industry that isn’t known for photos, create infographics using a service like Canva.
Respond to Comments
Many of us are guilty of posting something and then forgetting about it, but we should remain engaged in the conversation our fans are having. Not only does it prevent the conversation from spiraling out of control, but it also shows that you care what people have to say about your company. By paying attention, you will get a better sense of what your fans are interested in and be able to use that to your advantage.
There’s so much content out there that it is hard to be different. However, there are still plenty of opportunities. Every company is unique in some way. Is your brand known for or trying to cultivate a reputation for wacky humor? Do you have a point of view that hasn’t been expressed before? Find your social media voice and run with it.
